We believe that housing is a human right.

Creating innovative and affordable housing options for those experiencing homelessness in Peterborough is a main pillar of our work at One City.

One City's Housing Program

We own five houses and partner with three private landlords and three non-profit agencies in town to offer a total of 48 spots in 11 homes. 26 of these spots are supported by One City’s supportive housing team; the rest by other social service agencies in town.

We currently have one coordinator, and a team of housing and administrative support to develop and carry out support plans with all our tenants. Some of our residents require support occasionally, and some we connect with daily.

We also provide assistance with tracking rent, supporting occupants with arrears and budgeting, and liaising between homeowners and residents to maximize chances of success for all parties.

In addition to our support team, we work closely with the Director of Property Development, who leads our housing acquisition, as well as our maintenance team, who play a pivotal role in keeping our housing in good shape.

We Involve Residents as Part of the Process

To set residents up as well as we can, they are a part of each step in the process: from choosing values and expectations for the home to meeting and approving new occupants. Our support staff work with each resident individually, and also focus on community building in the house as a unit.

Our Program Removes Housing from the Private Market

Housing has become an investment, more than a basic human right. By purchasing housing, we remove housing off the commodification market, creating more accessible and affordable housing options.

Reinvesting Housing Dollars Back into the Nonprofit Sector

When residents pay rent, which can include funding from Ontario Works, ODSP, or even subsidy pots, this comes back to One City, which we then use to upkeep housing, pay the mortgage, gradually lower rent costs, and subsidize supports. Ultimately, the money goes further.
